Strengths
- Very cheap through providers, from about $0.19 input and $0.65 output per million tokens.
- A widely used open model with mature tooling and support across many services.
- A window of up to 1 million tokens, and it understands images.
- Stronger than the smaller Scout: 80.5 on the MMLU Pro knowledge test in Meta's table, against 74.3 for Scout.
Weaknesses
- The license does not grant rights to the multimodal Llama 4 models to people living in the EU or companies headquartered there. An EU company may not run it or build on it itself. End users of finished products are not affected.
- Old knowledge: it stops in August 2024.
- Neither Slovak nor Czech is among the 12 officially supported languages, and image understanding is English-only.
- Meta has replaced it with Muse models and no longer offers Llama on its own API.
- Companies with over 700 million monthly active users need a separate license, and products must show “Built with Llama”.
Best for
- cheap bulk processing of English text for companies outside the EU
- existing projects built on Llama
Not ideal for
- EU companies that want to run or fine-tune it
- products in Slovak or Czech
- up-to-date information
How to use it in Europe
Meta no longer offers Llama on its own API, but you can still download the weights, and providers listed on OpenRouter host the model. Watch the license: people living in the EU and companies headquartered there get no rights to the multimodal Llama 4 models. An EU company may not run it, fine-tune it or build a product on it itself. If you are only an end user of a finished app, this does not affect you. For new projects, Muse Glimmer 30B or Muse Spark Open is the better choice.
