Strengths
- Open weights under Apache 2.0, which allows commercial use and modifications.
- Small enough for a single GPU or a device without the cloud, so your data stays with you.
- A 256K token context window even at 14 billion parameters, and it understands text and images.
- Only $0.20 per million input and output tokens in the API.
Weaknesses
- It is an older generation from December 2025, newer options are Small 4 and Medium 3.5.
- Mistral does not list a thinking mode for it. For harder tasks, Mistral Small 4 is the better choice.
Best for
- local and offline use on a single GPU
- devices without a cloud connection
- first company trials with sensitive data on your own hardware
Not ideal for
- complex reasoning
- coding agents
How to use it in Europe
It is available through the Mistral API across the EU, and data is processed in the EU by default. The real advantage is running it yourself: download the weights for free and run them on your own computer or server, so your data never leaves. The smaller 8B and 3B versions suit even weaker hardware.
